The Global Corporate Governance Forum and Reuters Foundation have launched a cooperative program designed to build capacities among journalists in reporting on issues related to corporate governance. Based on the view that “better companies make better societies,” the objective is to strengthen journalists’ reporting and investigative skills in light of this unique ability to disseminate information on corporate governance to the business community and to the wider reading public, and to make readers aware of company activities that can have significant impact on society.
The program’s first workshop was organized in Belgrade, in October, 2007. The second workshop was held in Cairo, Egypt. The third one was held in Mumbai, India.
This Eurasia Media Workshop in Almaty, Kazakhstan included journalists from Kazakhstan, Kirgizstan, Tajikistan, Azerbaijan and Georgia and has been co-organized by the Global Corporate Governance Forum, Reuters Foundation, Center for International Private Enterprise and IFC Central Asia team.
19 journalists from leading media outlets of all 5 countries gathered in Almaty to learn about the best corporate governance practices and answer the question why is it important to cover corporate governance related stories, share their experience with each other as well as the international experts invited by the organizers. Roger Jeal, a trainer with the London-based Reuters Foundation, said he was “encouraged by the participants’ interest and knowledge about the issue.”
“One of the most valuable aspects of this training was the opportunity to meet the colleagues from the region. During these days we learned that there are both many similarities and differences in our countries that can be used as good foundation for articles and analytical materials that we prepare,” noted Dina Jekibayeva, the participant reporter from business weekly Capital.kz
